My favorite Windows programs

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

I thought of making today’s entry computer-related. :) What do you think?

Here’s my favourite programs for Windows (XP).

Mozilla Firefox
The notorious free, open-source browser whose countless plugins make it a very flexible tool. It supports tabs, pop-up blocking and nice skins (Personas). It’s a crazily wonderful replacement to Internet Explorer, which is totally second to Firefox.

Pidgin
An open-source messenger that allows users to connect to multiple IM accounts simultaneously, which include AOL IM, MSN, and Jabber platforms. It’s very lightweight, fast and does not overload CPU.

Mozilla Thunderbird
I use this great alternative to MS Outlook, which comes with a very powerful spam filter and a cute interface that makes email reading an enjoyable online activity. I loves its emoticons too!

VLC
Windows Media Player slows down my PC too much for my likings! That’s why I love VLC as its replacement, especially since it is not only lightweight, but it also supports more video formats than WMP: RM, MOV, AVI, DIVX, OGG, MP4, and much more. I love its friendly GUI too.

Looking into Cloud Computing

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I’ve gotten interested into Cloud Computing as a concept since my company has decided on implementing said architecture.

I linked the Wiki page above, but I’m still going to cite a portion of text here:

Cloud computing refers to the provision of computational resources on demand via a computer network. In the traditional model of computing, both data and software are fully contained on the user’s computer; in cloud computing, the user’s computer may contain almost no software or data (perhaps a minimal operating system and web browser only), serving as little more than a display terminal for processes occurring on a network of computers far away. A common shorthand for a provider’s cloud computing service (or even an aggregation of all existing cloud services) is “The Cloud”.

I get that my company managers wish to obtain a more decentralized architecture in order to enhance server resources and maintenance, however I’m afraid it might take some time for me to fully understand the way said architecture works. For the moment, I’m only a humble programmer. :)
